Prejudice and Discrimination Prejudice and discrimination can take several different forms. The first item I would like to delineate in this essay is the correlations between prejudice, racism, and discrimination. Prejudices quite often stem from ignorance or a lack of understanding. Essentially, prejudice strips away any individualism that belongs to a person and creates a negative opinion as soon as a connection is made to the group with which the person belongs. This happens because the prejudice person immediately passes judgement on the other person without having any evidence or reason to support the negative opinion. Sexual prejudice, which represents negative attitudes based on a person’s sexual orientation, is another form (Herek, 2004). Likewise, hating someone based on financial status is another example. One could even say that hating anyone that wears red shoes is also demonstrating prejudice. Prejudice against someone s religion is slightly more complicated simply because the situation usually invites other forms of prejudice along with the religious element. This may be due to a common correlation incorporating a person s religion with his or her race and heritage. Studies have even shown empirical evidence indicating that corporate brands and labels, with strong stereotypic association to a specific country, race, or religion, suffer a direct prejudice manifesting as negative attitudes, related to animosity (Russell Russell, 2010).
